One of the most significantly unique and culturally vital spaces in Sydney will host the latest in a series of cultural happenings spanning the last 10 years.

Finding itself in a realm reminiscent of the Dada and Fluxus movements of the 1920s and 60s, Sedition sits outside of the bounds of system and market defined allowances for agile cultural exploration and creative practice.

Countless, internationally renowned experimental music acts have played at this barber shop buzz-hub, including Mani Neumeier [Acid Mothers Guru Guru], Chris Abrahams [The Necks], Lars Graugaard [composer, Denmark], Jon Rose [composer, Australia], Louis Burdett [drummer, Australia] and Jim Denley [composer, Australia]. The Difficult Music Festival in January 2010, held during the Sydney Festival, featured 138 experimental and classical musicians and sound artists, both local and international.

And the next evolution is born.
Left Coast Festival gains life.

A strong collaborative relationship between creative director and curator, Robyn Wilson and Sedition owner and curator Michael Joyce, lays forth the foundation to the 50 day festival, running 12 May to 30 June 2010.

A series of late-night, heated discussions about the often rigid state of our city’s cultural and artistic systems caused an outcome that may just shake things up. Take a breath and a moment for richer thinking and discussion. Make space for more dynamic and agile artistic collision and interaction. The street setting of the barber shop allows for a level of immediacy and connection to the outside world routinely unobtainable in traditional gallery spaces.

The program will see a cataclysm of visual works, installation, new media and video works, hybrid experimental music/dance performances, classical improvising musicians, public discussion of tendentious sub-cultural and mainstream issues. A live pain vs pleasure synthesis conveyed through a tattoo/sound art performance. These, amongst many other experiences, will be offered, with spots on the schedule kept free to allow spontaneous performances and presentations by Sydney creative figures as well as internationals visiting for the Sydney Biennale.

A host of Australian and international artists and musicians will fulfill the program including fine art photographer Renato Grome, audio visual performer Flutter Lyon, conductor & Fluxus movement expert Geoff Gartner, members of the Brandenburg Orchestra, musician Peter Hollo [of Fourplay & FBi Radio], experimental music group The NOISE, artist Rose Vickers, artist Nik Kamvissis [of seminal music group The Menstruation Sisters], photograoher Raphaëlle Dézèque, musician turned movement performer Sam Pettigrew, fashion designer Ian Noica Omero, artist Madeliene Preston and more to be announced. There are whispers about Laurie Anderson making an appearance whilst she is in town for Vivid Festival.

These diverse works and performances will explore and respond to the idea of ‘Institutionalised Freedom.’

We all live inside of institutions.
We are, in fact, surrounded.
It cannot be denied. Our gender, our work, our sexuality, our social scene, our personal preferences.
We are defined by our surroundings. We all make-up countless categories.

This is not a suggestion of an assumed negativity toward the concept of the institution. This is a reminder to look around. Think about your categories. Think and talk about the validity of those categories. Should they be changed? Or should it be our perception that changes?
