POPULUS : LUCINDA SWIFT : FASHION DESIGNER : NEW YORK

Lucinda Swift is the crafter of the tiny label U cinda, currently based in New York. I met Lucy last year when I was in NYC and she is a rather special one. She had just made the move from Melbourne to study at the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

The unification of flesh and fabric forms U cinda’s designs . The forever evolving pieces ignites imagination and adaptablility for the wearer and its context, breathing light into the individual and its surroundings.

Ucinda’s nomadic handcrafted label adapts to her current contexts, resources and exchanges. Lucinda says “Welcome to my online transient store. Trace the venture from New York to South America. And don’t hesitate to purchase friends! It will travel across the seven seas to get to you.”

I asked Lucinda to interpret the same set of inkblots that our friend Ron Winter (NYC filmmaker) did..but alas Ms Swift did not return a set of worded answers. Instead she sent us this beautiful visual response, a coloured inkblot collage. We love to see the Views of Courage growing new angles like this..

“I interpreted the picture in a tactile physical manner.
As I feel this is my strongest communication channel.
I used the childhood technique to trigger an inner intuitive exploration, crystallizing my inner language creating an interpretation of tongues.
Removing the act of acting translating a rhythm and understanding with color.
Over the course of an afternoon the building of a body emerged. Hence the title: The Growing Body
Reflecting the energy that connects all living forces. “

When was the last time you truly exercised courage?
It could have been a moment of shear, overt, bravery or even the simple action of openly expressing an honest emotion.

“I found my self a couple weeks ago at the cremation of my work in Brooklyn. The space was a fashion library where I had a communal studio space out the back. The day of the fire I had been working in the space which naturally placed me on the suspect list. Aware of my foot prints that morning I knew I was in the clear, however I had to project this at the most appropriate time. Sedating and equalizing the inner angst and vulnerability surrounding the situation I waited for the group to be recouped in one area. Facing my boss her father and the local “legal team” I walked into the cafe next door and stated my exact movements in hope to find clarity of what caused the fire. Here I defined my truth under intimidation which I believe was a calling of inner courage.”
